Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announce a free, one-day online course on Himalayan cryospheric hazards. This course aims to educate participants on crucial issues related to climate change and its impact on the Himalayan glaciers.
This course is open to final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students in India.
Participants will also receive a certificate upon completing the course requirements.
This course will cover the importance of the Himalayan cryosphere, highlighting how climate change is affecting glaciers, snow cover, and river basins.
Topics will include glacier hazards, glacier dynamics, glacial lake dynamics, permafrost melting, landform dynamics, snow cover dynamics, and debris flow.
Participants will learn about the formation of new glacial lakes, which pose risks such as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), and the emerging issue of permafrost melting.
This course will be held online through ISRO’s e-class platform and will include four key sessions:
- Overview of geological hazards (11:00-11:30)
- Elements and dynamics of the cryosphere from a climate change perspective (11:35-12:20)
- High mountain hazards in the Himalayas, focusing on debris flow (2:15-3:00)
- Remote sensing applications for cryospheric hazards (3:05-3:50)
This programme is free of charge and requires no specific hardware or software beyond good internet connectivity.
Students can join using a desktop, laptop, or other suitable devices with a camera, microphone, and speakers.
Students can register individually or through their respective nodal centres.
Those who register through nodal centres need approval from the centre coordinator and individual registrations are approve automatically.
Participants must attend at least 70% of each session to qualify for a certificate, which will be available for download through the ISRO Learning Management System (LMS).
This one-day workshop is expect to enhance students’ understanding of Himalayan cryospheric hazards.
This course will help early-career researchers and students explore new areas of study and potential career paths in climate science and space exploration by addressing glacier and snowmelt impacts.
