India Announced T20 Squad for England Series: Mohammed Shami is Back | Details Inside

BCCI have announce Indian Cricket Team 15-member T20I squads for upcoming series against England, schedule to commence next month. The Men’s Selection Committee has pick India’s 15-member squad starting from 22nd January in Kolkata.

Mohammed Shami has made a comeback into the Indian cricket team for the five-T20I series against England starting January 22.

Shami has out of the national side since the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia on 19th November.

Since then, he had nursing injuries and even underwent an ankle surgery.

Mohammed Shami was rule out of the India vs Australia Test series after the BCCI conclude that a swelling in his knee require some more inspection.

He had playing for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the last couple of months. 

As there were a few surprises too in BCCI’s squad selection. 

Rishabh Pant has not pick for the T20I series, where India will be led by Suryakumar Yadav.

Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson are the two wicketkeepers.

The BCCI did not provide a reason on why Rishabh Pant was ignore.

All-rounder Shivam Dube was also not pick but India’s new hero Nitish Kumar Reddy was selected. 

Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh are the other pacers in the squad.

The spin department consists Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar with Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh.

Mohammed Shami’s inclusion for the T20I series against England is a clear indication that the fast bowler is very much in the reckoning for a spot in the Champions Trophy.

After the Border Gavaskar Trophy debacle, the Indian cricket team will be desperate to win the ICC Champions Trophy.

Having Mohammed Shami in the line-up will bolster the Indian attack.  

The BCCI has sought an extension from ICC over the announcement of the India squad for the Champions Trophy.

BCCI Name This Star As Vice-Captain For India vs England T20Is

The return of Mohammed Shami was the biggest news that came out of the BCCI selection meeting for the India vs England five-T20I series that starts on 22nd January 2025.

Also, Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in the Perth and Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has got rest for the forthcoming series against the Three Lions.

But there were some other surprises too. 

Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the five-match series, while, spinner Axar Patel will be the vice captain.

Hardik Pandya is in the squad but he has ignore.

Mohammed Shami Won’t Play For India vs England In All Five T20Is

Nearly 14 months after he last play an international game, seamer Mohammed Shami return to the Indian team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against visiting England.

The 34-year-old Shami’s last outing for India was the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia at Ahmedabad on 19th November, after which he was out of the team for a long time due to an ankle injury for which he underwent surgery in the UK in 2024.

Mohammed Shami’s rehabilitation process was a long and arduous one and a swelling on his knee then prevent him from joining the Indian team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, leaving Jasprit Bumrah to shoulder the bulk of the pace bowling load.

As it is understood that Mohammed Shami has pick because he will also be a part of the Champions Trophy squad and will be gradually working on his bowling load.

He is not going to play all 5 games against England.

India and England will then face off in a three-match ODI series from 6th February 2025.

Why Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill Weren’t Pick For T20Is?

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finally announce the much-anticipated squad for the T20Is against England, though there continues to remain suspense over the roster for the ODI side.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee made some tough calls as it decide to leave out big names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant.

As confusion erupt over their absence from the series, a report has claim that the selectors decide to give them a rest after an intense Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

With the ODI series against England and the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy the primary focus, the board didn’t want to take chances over Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant’s fitness.

As they decide to leave them out for the 5-match T20I series against England.

The BCCI has also reportedly ask for an extension as the deadline to announce the provisional Champions Trophy squad arrives.

BCCI is said to have sought extra time before they finalise the roster.

The 4th game of the series will be play on 31st January 2025 in Pune.

Mumbai will host the final match of the T20I series on 2nd February 2025.
